To understand an animal:

Reduce your understanding of the mental ability of the animal to a very low level.  Leave in only that which the animal needs, the basics of life, and any physical adaptations and facts that that animal species and individual animal have garnered that we know about in our studies and observations.  But, & here is the main key of what people usually do wrong, do not reduce your understanding of mental function of the animal to that of a Democrat.  That's too far.  Also,

do not delude yourself, and get rid of stories of delusion about what abilities the animal has.  It is not a spirit guide (in most senses), human, talking to you in human speech, or a human part of your family.

None of that is to say that it isn't part of your clan; both cats and dogs will, in their own way, include you as an extended non-species form of their clan.

Also, some animals will get more friendly and want to have a very minimal relationship.  One owl seemed to like me a lot, and came to toot near me for decades.  A skunk treated me with knowledge and appreciation (mainly in that it didn't run away or spray me), for weeks.

But that's about it.  They aren't having a deeper relationship.

I've found that when I think like a, compared to a human, stupid animal, and get rid of the delusions and prejudices we humans have, I can understand animals just fine.  They hunt.  They eat.  They defend.  They sleep.  They clean.  That's about it.  I guess if your cute furry cat suddenly grew to 4x your size tomorrow, it would very happily purr, lick you, and then eat you on the spot.  A monster dog would probably bring you a bear to eat, then get mad that you can't figure out how to cook it.

Come to think of it, I can't quite figure out the monster dog.  Would it demand a properly sized doghouse?  Would it chew on us for experimentation and fun, eating and killing us in the process?  I think yes to both.

They're animals.  Treat them as such.  Since they're much smaller than us and bred to be safer, cats and dogs (besides pinchers and pits) are relatively safe, but if you were a small human (such as a baby or midget), recalculate and realize that this is just all relatively simple.

I think most Republicans are naturally aware of most everything I said above.  They are mentally fit to think like I siad.  They can discriminate (instead of thinking every "being" is equal), can see clearly (rather than delude themselves), and can treat animals with appropriate care and caution (rather than carelessness or danger).

It's kind of like how we understand Hamas, Antifa, and how we should understand Russians.  They are not the same as us.

Democrats seem more deluded & fantastical.
